What is Confirmation?

Confirmation is a time set apart in an older child’s life to explore:
  1. Who am I as a person? What are my own values and beliefs? Who and what have brought me to this place and how do I see myself growing in the future?
  2. What does it mean to be a part of a community of faith?  What does it mean to depend on one another, stand up for one another, and commit to one another?  What are my gifts and where am I called?
  3. What are some of the great spiritual teachings that have influenced my life?  What are the teachings of Jesus that are most important to me and to my community?  What are some ways I can keep growing, not just in my body and in my mind, but also in my spirit?

In other words, the purpose of Confirmation is to grow in our understanding and experience of:

  • The love of Christian community and an awareness of what it means to be a part of a community of faith, hope, love, and joy.
  • Our own identity as child of God – a cherished and unique person, a seeker, and a pilgrim on a life long journey of faith.
  • The spiritual life as a life long journey and practice and the realization that we can each find ways to stay connected to God.
  • Compassion for others and a growing sense that we can make a difference in the world through awareness, service, and justice.
  • Confirmation is not just a “decision” to join the church. It is a period of growth, a time set apart for exploration and discovery. Ultimately, it is an invitation for young people to discover for themselves how they will embark on their lives as Christians. It is also a commitment on the part of the congregation to be there for them and with them all along the way.
