Living Your Faith: Emily Tafel
This new monthly feature highlights members who are living their faith through the ministries and fellowship opportunities at FPC!
Thoughtful and committed leadership, creativity, and compassion are words to describe this church leader. We are so fortunate that Emily Tafel shares her energy and talents as a member of FPC.
Emily and her husband, Cody, moved to Richmond and joined FPC in 2004. They both became involved in outreach projects and fellowship activities at church. This provided a means to connect in the community and with church members, and they still enjoy those friendships today. Emily works part-time, they have two daughters and quite a busy life, but she still makes church a priority in her life.
She was serving as a deacon when she was called last year to serve as moderator of the Diaconate, guiding this group through some significant changes in purpose and activities. Through her leadership the deacons are refocusing their talents and returning to their biblical call and Book of Order purpose.
This newly aligned ministry for members of the congregation to be involved with is Compassion Ministry Teams, which includes teams for Membership, Senior Member Connection, Congregational Support, Healthcare, and Compassion Wrap-around. These groups respond to the congregation and seek to show Christ's love, grace, mercy, and compassion to those in need.
Emily also serves as a member of the Children’s Ministry Council, volunteers at George Mason Elementary School, is an Outreach Discernment Task Force member, active Circle member, and among many other roles has recently served on various task forces to restructure FPC teams and activities. Her ability to synthesize concerns and ideas and work to create a thoughtful plan for change is remarkable...a true talent.
Why be involved in the life of the church? Emily believes God has given each of us many talents, and we are called to share those with the world and each other. The benefit of sharing your gifts is a blessing to the recipients and a gift to yourself, too.
Thank you, Emily, for sharing your time and talents with your church!
