The Empire of God: Reading John’s Gospel in the Roman Imperial World

April 8-29, Room 218 - Covenant Class
Dr. Art Wright, teacher

Among the four gospels, the Gospel of John is often described as “the spiritual gospel.” Yet it, perhaps more than any of the other three, displays a heightened awareness of the realities of life within the Roman imperial world. Read with attention to the presence of the Roman Empire within its pages, in many senses John becomes the most “political” of gospels! This four-week series will explore the intersection of the Gospel of John and the Roman Empire, with special attention to the socio-economic context and Jesus’ interactions with Roman characters in the Passion Narrative.
